Invisalign is a new system of straightening teeth without the use of conventional braces. A series of clear plastic aligners are utilized to create tooth movement. Moving teeth with removable aligners is not new. However, the computer program, which can generate a series of aligners with small changes is the new part. Invisalign is recommended for orthodontic situations with mild to moderate spacing or crowding. They are virtually undetectable, easy to use and comfortable to wear. Fortunately, there is an alternative to unsightly metal braces. At Oneonta Dental Center, Dr. Shivani Pandit can offer an alternative to conventional metal brackets..... Invisalign clear aligners. They are very different from metal braces in terms of appearance, but they work in the same way to correct a misaligned bite or crooked teeth. If you choose not to tell anyone that you are wearing Invisalign clear braces, it’s very likely that no one will know.
What are the Benefits of Invisalign?
Historically, there has been a trade-off. No one has ever wanted to have a bad bite or crooked teeth, but by the same token, no one has ever wanted to wear metal braces. Living with the metal braces has always been the price that had to be paid for better-looking teeth down the road, and often that price had to be paid for years on end.
With Invisalign clear aligners, the braces are barely discernable, and they can even be removed. Removability means that you never have to worry about food being trapped under your braces, leading to decay later on. You can take them out when you eat, brush and floss as you would if you had no braces, and then put them back on. The benefit here is huge – one of the biggest problems with metal braces has always been food getting trapped in and around them. It is very hard to clean around metal braces, and that means that there is a huge potential for decay on the front of the teeth where it is horribly visible and very difficult to correct. This problem is eliminated with Invisalign removable clear aligners.
What is the process?
Before you are fitted with your Invisalign braces, your dentist will take impressions of your teeth, and then use special software to create the Invisalign aligners. Most patients will go through a number of sets of aligners. The first sets simply fits over the teeth exactly as they are in the beginning. Then, several sets of aligners offer varying degrees of correction, until the final set fits over the teeth the way they are intended to end up. You could actually end up wearing as many as 30 aligners.
If you think that this is going to mean a lot of visits to your dentist (and therefore a lot of expense), though, you will be pleasantly surprised. All your aligners will be created at once, and you will simply change them regularly at home. Of course, you will need to come and see us from time to time at Oneonta Dental Center so Dr. Shivani Pandit can make sure that your treatment is working the way it is intended. You will not, however, be subjected to the painful tightenings that you would have to expect if you had conventional metal braces. Most patients are a candidate for this alternative to braces.

Many patients who come to our office are interested in Invisalign clear aligners because the are more cosmetically appealing. The unattractive and uncomfortable qualities of metal braces make the clear aligners a very popular choice. But you may still have questions about the procedure and what you can expect. Here are the answers to some of the most common Invisalign FAQs we’ve received over the years.
How Does Invisalign Work?
The Invisalign system involves a series of slightly different clear trays that are created to fit over your teeth. These trays very gradually shift your teeth into position. Each tray moves your teeth slightly more, step by step, until your smile looks beautiful.
How Long Does Invisalign Take?
You will wear each Invisalign aligner for around two weeks before moving to the next one. How many trays you will need, and how long your overall treatment will last, depends entirely upon how much correction your teeth or bite require. However, Invisalign is significantly faster than metal braces, often knocking months or even years off the usual treatment time.
How Should I Care for My Invisalign Aligners?
For most patients, simply brushing your aligners with a soft toothbrush and rinsing them under running water is sufficient to clean the aligners. Because you will be wearing them except when you eat or brush your teeth, you don’t need to worry about how to store them overnight.
Is Invisalign More Expensive than Metal Braces?
Invisalign clear braces are comparable to metal braces. However, it may seem more expensive because the treatment is shorter, therefore you pay the same amount as metal braces in a shorter period of time.
